On another recent cloudy Saturday morning, we visited the Feira da Ladra, ”Thieves Market” – Lisbon´s huge flea market which dates back to the 13th century. According to archives it moved about Lisbon until it found its present locationin 1881 on the Campo de Santa Clara. This huge market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday from 7 AM to late afternoon. The atmosphere is lively, the vendors friendly and willing to haggle. Anything and everything is for sale: lots of (in my opinion) junk, tourist paraphernalia, clothes, cd´s, some antiques and artisans work etc. We spent several hours strolling between the stalls, bargining for some interesting kitchen items and people watching.
The Chiado and Bairro Alto areas of Lisbon have lots of great little shops. Each time we walk along the winding streets we discover unique and special places. A delightful boutique which integrates vintage and new: beauitful things from Portuguese designers and Paris is Veronique. www.veroniquelisboaparis.com .
There are still wonderful “Mom and Pop style ” shops to be found, though many have closed due to the popularity of several enormous malls. We love “A Carioca” on Rua da Misericordia 9 (Baixa/Chiado) a quaint shop which sells teas, coffee and choclate and has the most friendly staff.
My absolute favorite shop is the tiny Luvaria Ulisses, Rua do Carmo 87 (Baixo/Chiado). It only sells gloves and has its original elegant decor from its opening in 1925. I adore trying on the delicate creations which are dusted with powder and prestretched with a wooden devise that looks abit like a tong. Buying gloves there is a speical treat, a step back in time. They will make your custom pair of dream gloves in two to three days.
We have put together a list of our favorite, quaint shops with itinerary suggestions for day trips to Lisbon. This great city is only a 35 minute drive from eco-guesthouse Colina Flora. Colina Flora´s great location is perfect for folks who want a multifaceted vacation which incorporates beautiful beaches, great sightseeing, adventurous sports and fun shopping. www.colinaflora.com
