Happy New Year from mostly sunny and mild Portugal

5/1/2011

Colina flora, the green B&B, set in the  wonderful hills of the Sintra Natural park opened  Christmas Eve.  Seven delighful guests took part in our dress rehearsal.  We worked out some minor quirks and everyone had a delightful time.  We are now  listed on www.bedandbreakfast.com, www.homelidays.com and www.justbedandbreakfst.com.  We have great winter specials and, for  folks looking for a longer Winter Get-away, we have special offers which include great vegetarian dinners (of course we also prepare delicious carnivore meals).  Contact us for details: thecolinaflora@hotmail.com.

Portugal is an amazing  country.  We have recently read Martin Page´s book “Portugal, the Frist Global Village”.  The author has written an in-depth historical review of all of  Portugal´s achievements over the centuries.  The Portuguese were dedicated navigators for centuries and the first Europeans to arrive in Japan.  We recommend this book to anyone thinking of vacationing or even moving to Portugal.  A well written thriller placed in Portugal during World War II and modern times is Robert Wilson´s “A Small Death in Portugal”.  Most of our novels are “Bookcrossing Books”, begin reading here, take them home and pass them on.

We are often asked why we moved to Portugal.  We love the climate.  After battling dire winter for 17 years in northern New England it is a real treat to be able to enjoy the mild temperatures.  I rarely wear a coat.  It´s mostly in the 50´s, even during rainy season.  We love the country and its incredible history.  The people are extremely friendly and helpful.  And it is a paradise for vegetarians.

We have found a source of organic green and black teas from the Portuguese Azores Islands.  The only green and black teas  grown in Europe.  The teas are delightful and very affordable. We serve them at tea time with fresh baked muffins made with freshly ground wholegrain spelt flour, local almonds, cinnamon, ginger and honey.   Sources for these teas can be found on the internet at www.chagorreana.azores.com

We decided to open a small B&B because we love innkeeping and cooking and we thought folks might like to stay at a small, “green” country house tucked in the hills with  wonderful ocean views, very relaxing!!.  Our “greeness” has motivated us to restore with environmentally friendly products, even the sheets and towels are organic!! (wonderful cozy cotton flannel sheets for the winter months).
