Unser Taeglich Brot in Portugal

28/6/2011

Hallo liebe Leute!

Our Daily Bread in Portugal

Hello Everyone!

We love good bread and  have found many delicous varieties here in Portugal.  Our absolute favorite  is from the Miolo  (miolo is a great Portuguese word with several meanings: “soft part of bread” and “good sense” are just two of them) Bakery in Cascais.  Angela, the grand baker lady and owner, is truly dedicated and we find she  bakes the best whole grain, organic sourdough in Portugal.  She wholesales to several shops between Lisbon and Cascais.  Her Date/Walnut bread made with whole rye flour is so delicious, I´ve been known to eat  an entire loaf on the way home.  This coming Saturday afternoon July 2, 2011 Flores do Cabo Gallery is hosting an opening exhibit featuring the Miolo bread.  There will be lots to tantalize the senses.  If you´re in the area please come.

Rund ums Jahr tolles Klima im Sintra Naturpark, Portugal

Hallo liebe Leute!

Great year round climate in Serra de Sintra, Portugal

23/6/2011

Hello Everyone!!

We have lived here for nearly 2 years and love it, and the wonderful mild climate surely is a major plus.

If you are seeking to vacation some place with refreshing country-sea air, lots of sunshine, never too hot or cold, cool nights, and beautiful landscape (perfect for walking, biking, horseback riding), quaint villages, pristine beaches (perfect for surfing, ) and amazing historical sites come to the Sintra Natural Park.  An added bonus is that most of the area restaurants (we´ll tell you which ones are off the tourist beat) have delicious food at affordable prices and there are lots to choose from.

While other parts of Portugal and other Mediterranean countries are often sweltering and the beaches overcrowded, the temperatures in the Serra da Sintra stay comfortable (we use our down duvet  all the year, except for the occasional night in July) and the beaches are never packed like sardine-cans.  There are several beaches that require a bit of walking/hiking to get to. And the reward for the effort is hundred-fold, these are fantastic magical places with only a handful of people enjoying the incredible beauty.  Consider vacationing in Portugal and say at Colina Flora, a small, yet lovely, country eco guesthouse, located int he heart of the Sintra hills with ocean views and only minutes to beaches www.colinaflora.com

Beautiful beaches of the Sintra Natural Park, Portugal

20/6/2011

Hello Everyone!

Portugal has many wonderful beaches which are much loved by the Portuguese, so  lots of effort is put into grooming and maintaining them.

The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park´s  most popular beach is Guincho. This is a favorite  for surfing.  The white sandy beach is so beautiful, surrounded by a large expanse of dunes.  On the far end of the beach is a great bar/restaurant tucked between the dunes www.bardoguincho.pt  that stays open till three AM on week-ends and serves good food in a pleasing ambiance with the waves crashing below.

Our favorite beach is Praia da Adraga.  A truly beautiful site tucked between the cliffs which is not in the guidebooks.  White sand, cliffs, caves, and a top rate fish restaurant/bar/cafe at the beaches edge.  We come down to the beach to watch the sunset.  All of our guests at Colina Flora www.colinaflora.com  , a small, yet lovely country eco-guesthouse with ocean views and only a few minuutes drive to Adraga beach,  are mesmerized.  Our guests declare Adraga to be  their favorite beach -stunning!!!.

Azulejos - Portuguese tiles

19/6/2011

Hello Everyone!!

Of all the places I have lived, Portugal is my absolute favorite.  Fresh air, sunshine, beautiful country, awesome historical sites, great friendly people etc etc.  And with so many diverse choices for an interesting and enjoyable vacation Portugal  is a great travel destination.  www.visitportugal.com

We are fascinated by the beautiful  Azulejos tiles which have been made and used to decorate the exterior and interior of buildings since the 15th century.   The Moors brought this craft with them when they invaded Portugal.  And the art form has evolved over the cneturies.  There are lots of blue and white themes seen especially in churches.  The traditon is contiuned to this day with contemporary artists designing new azulejos themes.  Beautiful!!
