Saturday night (29.01.2011) the Culturgest Cultural Center located in Portugal´s largest bank, Caixa General, hosted, as part of its two week long Bluesfestival called Hootenanny, Luther Guitar Junior Johnson. Luther, 72, is a legend amongst blues lovers. He has played with many of the great blues musicians including Muddy Waters and Taj Mahal. He appeared in the blues cult movie the Blues Brothers. We were great fans of Luther´s while living in New Hampshire, USA where he still resides. So we were excited to find him performing in Lisbon. (Its only a 35 minute drive from Colina Flora B&B to the center of Lisbon). The comfortable, modern auditorium of the Culturgest´s 600 seats were filled, the acoustics were great, Luther and his band were terrific.
Lisbon´s nightlife is exciting and varied: Le Chat is a great new bar with a vast vareity of creative coaktails and a magnificient view of the Tagus River from its terrace, on Jardim 9 de Abril. Go there for after concert drinks. Its open late into the night. Some other great night spots are: The Tejo Bar, Souk Bar, and for great African rythem to dance the night away Mussulo and Disco Luanda.
On our way home we often stop at the Moinho Don Quixote bar/restaurant in the little village of Azoia (only a 10 minute drive from Colina Flora B&B). An antique windmill houses this popular bar. Its a great place to hang out, enjoy the ecletic decor, people watch and savor their great selection of food and spirits. Open every day from noon until 2 AM. We love it for a last round of after concert drinks and dessert - their brownie sundaes are heavenly.
Come, visit Portugal and stay awhile!!! A fact filled, fun book about Lisbon is Le Cool, A weird and wonderful Guide to Lisbon.
